Higher Level Thinking Skills & Phonics @ SK Jengka 2

Faridah bt. Jaffar has been combining higher level thinking skills with phonics in her Year 1 class.  She not only uses gestures to help students visualize the phonemes, she has been using mind mapping to help the students understand the relationships between writing, speaking and reading.  Faridah’s lesson reminds us to integrate critical thinking skills with any activity and to put some thought in our lesson plans.  When we plan effectively, student understanding and fluency increase.  Great work Faridah!

Cultural Awareness Workshops @ SK Jengka 3 & SK Chenor

This week, in Maran Cluster, we put on two Cultural Awareness Workshops for Year 1 & 2 students at SK Jengka 3 on 16th February and for the entire school at SK Chenor on 17th February.  In the workshop, “The Importance of Understanding Other Cultures: Pancake Day,” students learned about the cultural tradition and holiday celebrated in England, and around the world, known as Pancake Day.  We presented a mini-lesson on Pancake Day, and then the students all got to make pancakes!

First, students learned  the process for making pancakes.

Let’s learn how to make pancakes for Pancake Day!
Step 1: Pour the flour, sugar and salt into a bowl.
Step 2: Add the milk, oil and vanilla essence.
Step 3: Mix until smooth.
Step 4: Cook on a hot skillet & FLIP!
Step 5: Cover with lemon juice and sugar.

Next, the students learned “The Pancake Day Song.”

Tune: The Mulberry Bush

This is the way we add the flour
Add the flour, add the flour
This is the way we add the flour to make pancakes.

This is the way we pour the milk,
Pour the milk, pour the milk
This is the way we pour the milk to make pancakes.

This is the way we stir the mix
Stir the mix, stir the mix
This is the way we stir the mix to make pancakes.

This is the way we flip pancakes
Flip pancakes, flip pancakes
This is the way we flip pancakes for Pancake Day.

Then, students all had the opportunity to make their own pancakes. They followed the process they learned in the short paragraph and song, and then brought their pancake mix to Tom to cook for them.

Finally, they completed a creative activity where they designed the most delicious pancake.

Multi-Modal Delivery for Reading Fluency @ SK Jengka 5

In the Jempol cluster, we have been discussing the 21st Century Classroom & how to implement the many different suggestions set forth by the PPD.  We have also been focusing on multi-modal presentation of new content in class instruction.  To remind you, that means presenting the new content using different methods, for example from the book and through visual aids.

I was invited to attend an EXCELLENT class executed by Noraziah Binti Jelani at SK Jengka 5 today, 13th February 2015.  Noraziah leads the way in the use of ICT and 21st Century Classroom, and is always eager to integrate technology and classroom instruction.  However, she also sees the importance of presenting new content in different modalities.  In her reading lesson, Noraziah had students read in pairs, watch a short animation, participate in a group sequencing activity of the plot and had them do a dramatic reading at the end.  Her lesson plan reminds us of the importance of using multiple modalities to increase fluency and comprehension.

Great work Noraziah & excellent reminder to us all!

Brighton Kids English Club XI

Our most recent club meeting saw the greatest improvement in English yet! The small group of members have begun speaking English spontaneously. That's right, these amazing children have actually begun to use what they've learned to ask questions of me and of each other. They also try very hard to name objects they see, answer questions with full answers, and ask questions when they don't understand. This most recent development is incredibly encouraging, and I'm so proud of these club members!
We look forward to posting more English language developments as we make our way through 2015! Wish us luck!

Brighton Kids English Club X

Welcome to Brighton Kids English Club 2015! We started the year off right with a fantastic Club meeting on January 26th. We had only about five members this time, but we had enough fun for twenty! We started off by making balloon swords and animals (which mostly ended up being just snakes, popped balloons, and frightened children), and then played some English games to practice what we learned last year. After that, we played a bit of UNO, and we read Fox in Socks by Dr Suess! The children had a wonderful time trying to parrot the rhymes from the book! We also, of course, had snack time, and the children remembered their manners very well. They queued and spoke politely as they made their food and drink requests. Overall, it was a great success. Thank you to everyone who came, and we look forward to seeing you again on February 9th!
